If you have iCloud Photo Library and want to back up all your photos to a storage device attached to your Mac you can follow the guide above, but you will need to add the step of downloading the images from iCloud. Finally, to free up the space on your internal hard drive, open the Trash from the Dock or Finder window and click Empty. Remember you will need to plug in your drive (or connect to it via WiFi in order to see your photos there). Right click or Ctrl+click on the iPhoto file and move it to the Trash. Your computer will automatically recognize both devices. If they use FireWire cables, connect them to the FireWire port. If your hard drives use USB cables, connect them to the USB port. Attach your external drive to your Mac, and make sure it is showing up in. We'll be moving this library directly to an external drive, before telling the Photos app to load the library from the external drive by default. Make sure all the photos are there, and that everything is working before deleting the Photo library on your Mac. Step 1 Connect both portable hard drives to your computer using the supplied USB or FireWire cable and turn them on. Click your selected folder or photos and, still holding your mouse, drag them to the Finder window with your USB flash drive.Once the library has copied over, hold down the Option/Alt key and launch Photos.Wait while it copies over – this may take a while depending on the size of your library and the speed of the connection to the drive.Copy the Photos Library to the external drive.If you right click on the Photos Library package you can choose Get Info to see just how large the library is – you will want to ensure that the drive you are planning to copy it too is large enough to accommodate it, and any additional photos you add at a later date.(You may want to do this if you were copying images to a PC since the PC may not be able to view the contents of the Photos Library). This will show you the master folders containing your photos. ![]() (If you wanted to view the contents of this library without using Photo, you could right-click/control-click on it and choose Show Package Contents from the options.Inside this folder you will see the Photos Library, identifier by an icon like the one below.Open a Finder window and click on your Mac Home folder (the icon looks like a house and it will probably be identified by your username). Locate the Photos library on your Mac – you will find it in your Pictures folder.If the disk needs to be reformatted, you will need to Erase the disk, so make sure you copy anything from the disk first, then click on Erase and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If you need to reformat the disk, follow the steps in this tutorial: Open Disk Utility and check what format is being used. ![]() ![]() Note: At the time of writing, iCloud download limit stands at 999 photos at a time.Before you start, you need to make sure the external drive you are using is formatted for Mac OS Extended (Journaled). On the next window, select your External Hard Drive in left-pane and click on the Download button in right-pane.Īll the selected Photos will be downloaded to the External Hard Drive in a Zip file format. Note: If Command+A is not working, make sure iCloud Photos is enabled on your iPhone.ĥ. In iCloud Photos, switch to Photos Tab > press Command+ A to select all Photos and click on the Download Icon. After you are signed-in, click on the Photos Icon.ģ. Using Mac or PC go to and login to your iCloud Account.Ģ. If you have less than 1000 photos, you can follow the steps below to select All iCloud Photos and download them to an External Hard Drive.ġ. To select 500 Photos, click on the First Photo > Scroll down 50 rows > Hold the Shift key and click on the Last Photo in 50th row. Hence, if you have more than 1000 photos, try to download them in batches of 500 photos at a time.
